We secured funding from the Spaces for People programme to design and implement changes on Grassyards Road and Western Road to enhance the existing advisory cycle lanes. These lanes are quite narrow and can be disrupted by parked vehicles.The plans and photographs below show the extents of the areas we are considering and the current layout on Grassyards Road and Western Road.After design work by Sustrans we will be trialling soft segregation measures on Grassyards Road (see plans below). Unfortunately the proposals for improvements to the cycle lanes on Western Road will not be possible to implement on a temporary basis (which is a requirement of this funding stream). We also secured funding to design and implement changes on Garden Street and Hill Street to reallocate road space to give greater priority to cyclists. These roads link Ayrshire College (Kilmarnock) to the railway station, the town centre and onward to the National Cycle Network route (NCN 73) but the existing road environment does not support easy cycling.Sustrans have developed a scheme that meets the above aims and which we are keen to trial but further development of this project is dependent on a relaxation of Scottish Government restrictions that have closed Higher and Further Learning centres, and resulted in home working for all who can. It will not be possible therefore to progress this scheme as part of the Spaces for People programme and so the scheme is on hold until we are further into the recovery stage from COVID-19; have a clearer idea of possible timescales for implementation, and have sourced alternative funding for the trial.<img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/commonplace-digital-limited/image/upload/v1613478330/projects/spacesforpeopleeastayrshire/e4525f6f-b161-4609-9278-7fa60eefff34.png" />

Have your say on our proposed School Streets trials

Funding is available to introduce measures that support physical distancing on the public roads at or near school entrances. These measures create part time pedestrian and cycle zones by restricting access to vehicles. The only vehicles allowed to drive on the affected roads would be blue badge holders, school buses/coaches/taxis, exempt vehicles such as the emergency services and people who have been issued permits. The feedback provided after implementation will help us to decide if there is value in making the measures permanent, if they should be removed early, or if modifications are needed.

We have been awarded funding for temporary measures to support physical distancing within Kilmarnock Town Centre and to support active travel for essential journeys. To help achieve these aims we are taking immediate action to pedestrianise Foregate Square and will shortly be making changes to allow cycling within the pedestrianised area of King Street.An image and document detailing our plans for Foregate Square can be viewed in the &#39;Additional materials&#39; section at the bottom of this page. We expect the same to be available for King Street soon. We also plan to put localised measures in place to help with specifics arising from the need to physically distance when accessing shops and services. Funding is available to introduce measures that support physical distancing on the public roads at or near school entrances and at School Crossing Patrol locations. We have identified an initial 5 schools where we think that it might be possible to implement temporary school streets and have passed these locations to Sustrans for further investigation and design work. Please see our <a href="https://spacesforpeopleeastayrshire.commonplace.is/news">news article</a> for more information. We are continuing to work through a process of identifying more schools which might be suitable for specific temporary interventions and hope to provide more detail on this soon. At that point you will be able to comment on our proposals. In the meantime you can read here what interventions we are considering:<li>Temporary Physical Distancing Signage – signs and carriageway markings reminding people to maintain appropriate physical distancing would be provided at regular intervals near the school entrance/ School Crossing Patrol location. We have already started to provide temporary physical distancing signs like the one below at and near entrances to schools. Look out for them in your local community and if there are locations where you think they are needed, please use our <a href="https://spacesforpeopleeastayrshire.commonplace.is/schemes/proposals/comment-on-kilmarnock-town-centre-with-our-interactive-map/details">Kilmarnock Town centre</a> or <a href="https://spacesforpeopleeastayrshire.commonplace.is/schemes/proposals/tell-us-where-physical-distancing-is-difficult-in-towns-and-villages/details">East Ayrshire communities</a> interactive maps to let us know.</li> <li>Temporary School Street – (Temporary Part Time Road Closure) All traffic is prohibited from driving on a certain street or part of a certain street at school start and finish times. Exemption permits would be available for residents and blue badge holders would also be exempt. <a href="http://schoolstreets.org.uk/">School streets</a> have been implemented in a number of locations in the UK, including in <a href="https://www.streetsaheadedinburgh.org.uk/">Edinburgh</a> . </li> <li>Temporary One Way system with Road Space Reallocation – Part of the street is dedicated to walking, cycling and wheeling (at all times). This means that vehicles would be restricted to travelling in one direction only (on the part of the street kept open). This vehicle lane would be deliberately quite narrow to ensure that speeds are kept low.</li> <li>Temporary Parking Restrictions – to make it easier for pedestrians to pass each other on the footway, parking would be restricted. There are a number of bus stops around East Ayrshire where, before lockdown, it would have been typical to see queues of people at peak times. These queues would frequently prevent other people from walking past on the footway. Although bus usage is currently lower than it was, as lockdown continues to ease this will begin to increase over time.
